An energy efficient glass furnace from China is a melting furnace that burns less fuel per tonne of glass through oxy-fuel or regenerative combustion, batch preheating and automated control, and is built and shipped by a Chinese manufacturer. The right design depends on your glass type, pull rate and fuel price. A headline saving figure tells you very little on its own. This guide is for plant managers, engineers and buyers outside China who are comparing quotes. After reading it, you can write a specification, compare suppliers in the same units and calculate payback with your own numbers. An energy efficient glass furnace is a melting unit that turns batch and cullet into molten glass using less fuel per tonne than a typical furnace of the same size and glass type. Five design choices drive that result: the combustion system (oxy-fuel or regenerative), batch and cullet preheating, insulation, automated control, and a tank sized to the real pull rate. Buyers judge an energy efficient glass furnace by specific energy consumption, measured in kJ per kg of glass melted. Put that number in your contract. A claim such as saves 20-30% on any furnace for glass means little until you know the baseline furnace, the glass type and the measuring point. Sundiatec oxy-fuel glass furnace page quotes 20-30% savings in fuel costs. Fuel cost also moves with fuel and oxygen prices, so treat the figure as a question for the supplier, not a guarantee. Melting and refining take about 62% of the on-site energy used across five US glass sub-sectors, so an energy efficient glass furnace is the largest single lever. For flat glass, the DOE glass bandwidth study puts a typical 2010 furnace at 6.19 MMBtu per short ton and a state-of-the-art furnace at 4.34. That equals roughly 7.2 and 5.0 GJ per tonne. Turn that gap into money. On a 500 tonne per day float line, saving 2.15 GJ per tonne adds up to about 392,000 GJ per year. At an assumed fuel price of $8 per GJ, the yearly value is about $3.1 million. Replace $8 with your own delivered price. The DOE baseline is American data from 2010, so a Chinese plant starts from a different point. A 2006 survey of 28 Chinese float lines found an average of 7,800 kJ per kg of melt, as summarised by British Glass. Energy numbers at a glance Oxy-fuel furnaces and large regenerative furnaces reach the lowest energy use in DOE's container-glass data. DOE also lists oxy-fuel as the state-of-the-art melter for glass wool, glass fiber and specialty glass. Electric melting suits some specialty glass and small tanks. Your size, glass type and local energy prices decide the winner. In the DOE data, regenerative furnaces reach the lowest intensities only at large sizes, above 331 short tons per day or about 300 tonnes. Among glass melting furnaces below that size, price an oxy-fuel glass furnace next to any regenerative quote. Furnace types compared An energy efficient glass furnace is not always an oxy-fuel one. An oxy fuel glass furnace does not pay off when oxygen is expensive, when your regenerative furnace is new, or when your site cannot supply oxygen safely. A European LIFE project that partly converted a float furnace cut NOx by 7.0% against a 10.0% target, and dust rose 12.3%. The LIFE project, run by Trakya Glass Bulgaria with Air Liquide, ran about 10 months. Dust rose alongside a 5.3% higher pull rate and stayed within the BREF range per tonne of glass. Advantages • Less nitrogen enters the flame, so combustion NOx and flue gas volume both fall. • DOE lists oxy-fuel as the state-of-the-art melter for glass wool, fiber and specialty glass. Limits • Oxygen costs money and needs safe handling on site. • The flame and temperature profile change, so burners and crown must be designed to match. • Dust can rise, as the LIFE trial showed, and the benefit depends on energy supply and prices. Skip oxy-fuel if delivered oxygen costs more than the fuel it saves, or if a young regenerative furnace faces no pressure to cut NOx. Buyers choose a glass furnace manufacturer in China for factory pre-assembly, one contract from design to commissioning, and in many quotes a lower capital cost. The risks are distance, import paperwork, spare-parts lead time and vague performance guarantees. You control most of them in the contract. Sundiatec, a glass furnace manufacturer in China, states that it manufactures and pre-assembles major equipment in its factory and debugs it before shipment. It then supports site construction, commissioning and operator training, and lists offices in Wuxi, Jiangsu and Xuancheng, Anhui. Ask three things before signing. Who supervises installation on your site? Which spare parts sit in stock in China, and how fast do they ship? In which language do the drawings and manuals arrive? A glass furnace turnkey project puts every stage under one contractor, from first consultation to after-sales support. Sundiatec describes eight steps: consultation, preliminary design, detailed design, fabrication and pre-assembly, site construction, commissioning, acceptance with training, and after-sales optimization. 1. Initial consultation: Product type, capacity, raw materials and site conditions are assessed. 2. Preliminary design: Furnace structure, key parameters, first layout drawings, scope and commercial terms are fixed. 3. Detailed design: Drawings cover the furnace, all equipment and the control room, with water, electricity and gas needs specified. 4. Fabrication: Major equipment is manufactured, pre-assembled and debugged in the factory before shipment. 5. Site construction: The furnace, steel structure, equipment, pipelines and utilities go up on your site. 6. Commissioning: The furnace is heated up and every piece of equipment is trial-run. 7. Acceptance and training: You formally accept the plant after stable operation, and operators are trained. 8. After-sales: The supplier keeps optimizing for energy savings, lower consumption, and product quality and stability. Ask which of these steps carry a written energy guarantee for your energy efficient glass furnace. Step 7, acceptance after stable operation, is the natural point to measure it. Compare quotes on guaranteed energy use, pull rate, glass quality, emission limits, campaign life and the acceptance test method, all in the same units. A low price without a measured guarantee only moves cost to your fuel bill. Ask every supplier of an energy efficient glass furnace to state specific energy consumption in kJ per kg of melt at a named pull rate and cullet ratio. Quote comparison checklist Send every supplier the same data sheet: glass type, daily pull, cullet ratio, fuel and its price, and site conditions. Different assumptions make quotes impossible to compare. For flat glass in China, the benchmark is GB 21340, the national limit for energy consumption per unit of flat glass product. The 2013 edition is obsolete and the 2019 edition replaced it. In Europe, the glass manufacturing BAT reference document from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre sets the emission benchmark. Check which rule your own permit follows. GB 21340 is a benchmark for plants in China. It does not bind your plant abroad, but it shows what a supplier's home market expects. For an export project, write your local limits into the contract: NOx, dust and SOx values, the measuring method and the reference oxygen level. Sundiatec's oxy-fuel package lists a De-NOx system among its auxiliary equipment, so confirm whether it is in scope and which NOx value it guarantees. Batching, bubbling, cooling, control and defoaming equipment all affect how much fuel a glass furnace burns per tonne. Sundiatec's oxy-fuel package lists a bubbling system, batch charger, cooling system, distributed control system, defoaming system and De-NOx system. Each one touches melting rate, heat loss or stability, and each one belongs in your quote as a named line item. A bubbling system stirs the glass near the tank bottom, which can raise pull rate on the same tank. A batch charger controls how evenly raw material covers the melt. A distributed control system holds temperature and pressure steady. Fully automatic batching keeps composition consistent from shift to shift. Cullet is the cheapest lever. DOE reports that every 10% more cullet cuts melting energy by about 2.5% to 3%, although it did not assess cullet cost or supply. Glass melting furnace modeling simulates the combustion space and the glass bath on a computer, usually with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), so burner layout, glass flow and temperatures are tested before construction starts. A layout error found in software costs days of engineering. The same error found at heat-up can cost a campaign. Ask your glass furnace engineering team what they model and how they validate it. Modeling is how an energy efficient glass furnace design gets checked before steel is cut. Ask for inputs and outputs. Inputs should include burner positions, firing rate, glass composition and pull rate. Outputs should include hot-spot position, glass flow patterns, refractory temperatures and flue gas temperature. Then ask how the model was checked against measurements from a furnace that already runs. Sundiatec's engineering steps cover preliminary and detailed design, but its public pages do not describe simulation. Payback on an energy efficient glass furnace equals the extra capital cost divided by the yearly saving. The yearly energy saving equals pull rate in tonnes per day, times 365, times energy saved per tonne, times fuel price. Use measured figures from your own furnace, and subtract added oxygen and maintenance costs. Here is an illustration, not a quote. A 300 tonne per day furnace saves 1.0 GJ per tonne at $8 per GJ: 300 × 365 × 1.0 × 8 = $876,000 per year. If the new design costs $2.6 million more, payback is about three years. Two adjustments matter. First, compare against your old furnace as it performs today, not on its first day, because regenerative furnaces lose about 2.7% efficiency per year. Second, count quality gains such as fewer seeds or less breakage, if you track them. A glass melting tank furnace is the standard furnace for glass melting on float, container and fiber lines. Batch enters at one end and molten glass leaves at the other, so it runs through a multi-year campaign without stopping. Smaller pot and day-tank furnaces melt in batches. Usually it lowers combustion NOx, because less nitrogen enters the flame, but results vary by design. In the LIFE Smart Oxy-Boost trial, NOx fell 7.0% while dust rose 12.3%. Set NOx and dust limits in the contract and confirm what De-NOx equipment is in scope. Sundiatec lists glass wool and rock wool production lines next to its oxy-fuel furnaces and inspection systems. For equipment for stone wool production, send your capacity, raw material and site data through the contact page. Ask for references for each line separately. Does a Chinese-built furnace meet European emission limits? It can, if the design and the De-NOx scope are specified against those limits. Name the emission values, the measuring method and the acceptance test in the contract. Compare them with the European BREF range for your glass type before you sign. Sundiatec lists operator training at acceptance and ongoing remote support, and describes after-sales optimization for energy and quality as step 8 of its process. Ask for response times in writing, and ask for the spare parts list before you sign. Write down five numbers: your daily pull, cullet ratio, current kJ per kg, delivered fuel price and target emission limits. Send them to at least three suppliers on one data sheet, and ask each to answer in kJ per kg with a named acceptance test. An energy efficient glass furnace China exporters quote you is only efficient if the guarantee is measured, in writing, at handover. Sundiatec engineers can review your data sheet and discuss oxy-fuel, turnkey and mineral wool options for your energy efficient glass furnace plan.
